Apple Pickin'

Bubee was out of school today, so we decided to take advantage of the nice weather (80F mostly sunny) in October to enjoy some apple picking. Our favorite place to go is B.J. Reece in Elijay, GA. This pick your own orchard also has a petting zoo and some of the BEST pies!

We accidentally took the scenic rout, but that was okay. God blessed us with some amazing views. Little Lady didn't like it too much though. We had to make sure she drank out of her sippy-cup frequently to help relieve the pressure with the increasing altitude.

Our first stop was Rosey Posey's favorite: the petting farm! For some reason it was a little smaller than in years past, but it was still fun.

Little Lady loved this chicken; maybe because this was the same chicken that attacked Bubee (See the top left corner of the video below at about the 20 sec mark).
After the petting farm it was off to the orchard for some yummy apples. This time of year the best ones to pick were Golden Delicious and Red Romas. The orchard provided 1/4 peck, 1/2 peck and 1 peck bags.

Bubee loved getting his own bag (1/4 peck) and pick different colored apples.
Rosey Posey was able to reach the higher branches and preferred the Golden Delicious.
Needless to say, Little Lady didn't care what kind it was as long as she had an apple to eat. Meme had to wash it off first and we made sure to leave room in a bag for the one she ate otherwise it just like shoplifting.
The area was pretty steep so I was so happy we had Little Lady's jeep stroller. The big wheels can traverse almost any terrain. The only down fall here was they were perfectly spaced to pick up apples.

We found as we went along that the ends of each row were pretty much picked clean and some rows you had to get 'in' the tree to find any apples.
After visiting the orchard we went back to the apple house for some yummy pies and to see the bee hive.

Once we got home, I laid out all the apples and realized I have a LOT of mason jars to wash that night. Looks like I'll be sharing my apple sauce recipe soon ;)

This isn't even 1/4th of the apples we picked.

Takeaway Tips
  • Don't be afraid to take the scenic rout.
  • Watch out for Chickens
  • Wash any apples you're going to eat most places use some kind of pesticides even the organic ones.
  • Don't shoplift! If the fruit you're picking is weighed, then you can't eat it till after that. If it's measured in a bag like a peck, then just leave room for the apple you eat in your bag and enjoy.
  • Use big wheeled strollers when on uneven terrain.  Our favorite is the Jeep Wrangler All-Weather Umbrella Stroller.
  • At any u-pick the most fruit will be found in the middle of the rows, as the end of the rows get picked over pretty quickly.
  • Slowdown and enjoy the fruits of your labor
  • Have a plan for your fruit.
